Hyderabad, India (Sports Network) - Former top-10 star Mary Pierce of France advanced Tuesday, but top-seeded Argentine Clarisa Fernandez was among the upset victims in opening-round action at the inaugural $140,000 WTA Indian Open.
The fourth-seeded Pierce needed all three sets to sneak past China's Jie Zheng, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, while Japan's Akiko Morigami ridded the tournament of its top seed with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Fernandez, last year's surprise French Open semifinalist.
