ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast _ A shaky French-brokered peace deal slid further toward collapse Tuesday amid reports of new clashes between government and rebel forces in the world's largest cocoa producer.
The Ivorian army said it had repelled an assault in Belleville, a town some 30 miles west of the cocoa- and coffee-growing hub of Daloa in western Ivory Coast. Lt. Col. Jules Yao Yao, an army spokesman, said rebel vehicles were seen approaching government-held areas Tuesday. He warned that the Ivorian army would launch an attack if French soldiers, who are policing a fragile truce, didn't intervene.
