Special interest groups and neighborhood organizations received tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars last year as Denver City Council members unloaded leftover money from their office budgets.
The money could have gone back into the cash-strapped general fund.
``I asked my constituents what they wanted to do with the money, and a majority said they wanted it put into parks,'' said Councilwoman Kathleen MacKenzie, who spent almost $11,000, including $7,804 on 11 park benches. ``They didn't want it back into the general fund.''
