--As a doctor, I appreciated Rod Dreher's article "USDA-Disapproved" (Jan. 27).
Unfortunately, Congress also favors factory farms over the health of consumers. In 2002 it failed to pass bills endorsed by the AMA that would have phased out the feeding of antibiotics to healthy farm animals to make them grow faster on less feed and to compensate for cramped, unhealthy conditions.
The AMA opposes this practice because it contributes to antibiotic resistance in human infections.
