THE CONTROVERSY OVER Title IX is only one part of the much deeper problems embedded in college athletics.
And there is no way to deal constructively with these bedrock difficulties until one central fact is faced and acted upon.
Football must be divorced from all other sports.
It is so inherently different from all the rest, in its procedures and effects, that unless it is treated differently it can only corrupt the overall athletic programs and educational missions of high schools as well as colleges, as it has been doing for the past 80 years.
