THE poignant story of a white woman who gave birth to a black baby some 300 years ago was immortalised in the name of a pub.
Called the Labour in Vain, the pub's sign showed how the woman tried to scrub her baby's skin white, terrified of what her husband's reaction would be.
For decades it was accepted as a remarkable piece of social history. But now it has come to the attention of lottery-funded race campaigners who have been awarded pound sterling25,000 to crusade for its removal.
The intervention of the so-called Pub Sign Project Committee has angered many in the village of Westergate, near Chichester, West Sussex.
