A UNIVERSITY lecturer is leading calls for the government to help make a proven jet lag remedy available to night workers and air crew.

Dr Jim Waterhouse, a senior lecturer at the Liverpool John Moores Institute of Sport's Science, has studied the effects of the hormone melatonin and believes, if it was properly researched, it could benefit doctors, pilots and other people who work night shifts.

The hormone, which occurs naturally in the body, is not licensed in Britain, but it is available in America as a food supplement and has been widely used to prevent sleepiness and irritability after long flights.
