Hong Kong's Dairy Farm International Holdings Ltd. is buying Taiwan's Kayo supermarket chain from Huei Yang Co. Kayo is northern Taiwan's third-largest supermarket chain with 21 stores. Dairy Farm will rebrand the Kayo stores with its flagship Wellcome brand, bringing the number of Wellcome stores to 143 and maintaining the brand as Taiwan's largest supermarket chain.
Australia's largest food company Goodman Fielder has rejected a $1.3 billion hostile takeover bid from spice maker Burns Philp and said it was in talks with other potential buyer (see FOOD INSTITUTE REPORT, Dec. 16, page 6).
