Feb. 11--SANFORD, N.C.--General Shale Brick is closing its 74-year-old Burlington plant and moving its production to Sanford, costing at least 45 workers their jobs.
The nation's second-largest brick manufacturer also said it is planning to invest several million dollars to increase production at its Brickhaven plant in Sanford, which was built in 1996. When the upgrades are completed this fall, the company expects to boost production at the plant 50 percent to 90 million bricks a year.
