The last proactive step SUNY Upstate Medical University took for women was admitting Elizabeth Blackwell.
So says Dr. Patricia Numann, who presents the annual Elizabeth Blackwell lecture from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Her topic is "The Feminization of Surgery," and she plans to tell it like it is.
Blackwell received her medical degree in 1849 from Geneva Medical College, which is now Upstate's College of Medicine. It was the first medical degree earned by a woman anywhere in the world.
