Article: Bellmer complex. .(Letter to the Editor)

To the Editors:

I would like to clarify a number of misconceptions in Abigail Solomon-Godeau's review of my book Behind Closed Doors: The Art of Hans Bellmer ["Dark Night of the Doll," A.i.A., Sept. `02]. Contrary to the writer's claim, it was never my desire to exonerate or recuperate Bellmer's work. If Solomon-Godeau had carefully read the introduction of my book, she would have noticed a key observation: "The critical responses to Bellmer's work have tended to be either apologies, celebrating it as liberatory and redemptive, even proto-feminist, or dismissals, seeing it as inherently sexist, misogynist, even deviant."
