One of the hottest topics in airport security today is biometrics, by definition, a statistical study of biological phenomena. Crime novels and television programmes have long romanticised the use of messy black ink fingerprinting to identify criminals. The scenario is usually followed by a bright light bulb flash, a mug shot, and a command that the suspect "turns to the left." For years, the fingerprint was considered the standard form of identification. It is common knowledge that everyone has a unique fingerprint pattern, but now a new standard is being developed.
