They looked like large hand muffs made of snow, or sections of rolled-up carpet. Or like invisible sprites had begun rolling up thousands of snowmen but were interrupted before adding a second ball.
But the snow formations that appeared overnight Tuesday in the fields and roadsides around the tri-state were just nature showing us another trick.
Called snow rollers, the often-hollow cylinders ranging in size from a golfball to a small garbage can, appear only with the right combination of icy ground, wet snow and strong wind. Few people around here, even weather experts, have ever seen them.
