Feb. 14--Oregon Health & Science University is making a $200 million bid to become one of the nation's top centers for researching infectious diseases that might be used in terrorist attacks or are emerging in nature.

The Portland school's scientists are leading a consortium, the Pacific Rim Biodefense Center, that is applying for National Institutes of Health grants to be named a regional center for studying germs such as the West Nile virus and hantavirus, and trying to create vaccines against them.
