ROBERT DE NIRO celebrates two landmarks this year... the 30th anniversary of Mean Streets, which put him on his way to being hailed as the cinema's greatest living actor, and his 60th birthday.
He could have been celebrating another - an Oscar nomination for best actor.
But De Niro, who shows no signs of slowing up, turned down the part of Butcher Bill in his friend Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York.
He could not bear to be away from New York for the eight months shoot in Rome.
