Feb. 16--Kohl's Corp. operated for years in relative obscurity with a small number of junior department stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota and a few other Midwest states.
With the opening of 28 stores in southern California next month, Kohl's becomes a coast-to-coast retailer and caps a decade of astounding growth by squaring off on the home turf of its rival Mervyn's.
The two chains operate stores that are similar in size and merchandise, chiefly aiming to reach moms in their 20s, 30s and 40s with brand-name clothes and housewares and an emphasis on weekly ...
