Mexico has imposed a 98.8 percent emergency tariff on imports of chicken thighs and drumsticks from the United States beyond the first 50,000 tons brought in duty-free in 2003.

Mexico's National Poultry Farmers' Union requested the chicken tariff be returned to the 2001 level. Mexico's Economy Ministry said Wednesday the provision would last a minimum of six months, according to Dow Jones Business News.

Tyson Foods Inc. of Springdale and Pilgrim's Pride Corp. of Pittsburg, Texas, the largest chicken producers in the United States, have processing plants in Mexico. Mexico is the third-biggest export market for U.S. chicken producers.
