Article: Indices down for 3rd quarter, but up for the year. (Price Index).

The overall medical-surgical price index for the third quarter of 2002 was 100.99, 0.23% lower than in the second quarter and 0.99% higher than in the third quarter of 2001.

The slight dip in the third quarter was echoed by many of the individual indices shown on this and the following page, but these are just the beginning of recoveries from a year-long chain of increases.

Of the 21 categories surveyed, 15 were up for the year, and six were down.

The steepest index increase was 25.91% for bandages and dressings, which had declined sharply earlier in 2001.

Solutions posted the steepest yearly decline, at 4.05%.
