In the fall of 1979 I bought a traditional Maine lobster boat that had been rigged for dragging. I made my first set right in front of the harbor, where day boats had been getting a few flounders.
A few is just what we had; few enough to count. That evening a committee of Perkins Cove fishermen climbed aboard the appropriately named Hard Times, and we went out and made another tow.
We measured the spread of the trawl doors and examined the shine on them to gauge their angle of attack, and we concluded the doors weren't fishing. We looked at the leg wires and the chain sweep on the net and concluded the net wasn't fishing either.
No fooling! But ...
