This year could be the turning point for the domestic catfish industry. Catfish farmers continue to struggle to meet costs, which may spur consolidation within the industry, forcing the supply down and prices up. Domestic catfish prices could also rise when the results of the antidumping lawsuit filed against the Vietnamese catfish industry are announced later this year.
Until recently, growing and selling catfish was a relatively predictable, profitable business down on the Mississippi Delta. The price to the farmers would fluctuate within a narrow range, averaging about 70 cents a pound, and fillet prices were normally about $2 more than that.
