Nikki Shoutz always wanted to be a game warden.

She grew up hunting, fishing, trapping and snowmobiling in the woods and on the lakes of north-central Minnesota. "I just really liked being outside," she said the other day.

But a high school advisor threw cold water on her aspirations back in 1975.

"He said I would never be a game warden," she said. "There were no female wardens then, and he said they'll never be any. He encouraged me to be a teacher or a nurse."
