Working on the water has become more complex over the years. Modern mariners must be more high-tech oriented and are required to receive more formal training and certification than ever before.

The list of STCW '95 qualifications is extensive. Added up, mariners often face several weeks of school. Not everyone requires all of the training, but most of it applies to a significant portion of the merchant marine.
