Smell of success: young Tokyo entrepreneur Ryu Murao brings Body Mint to Japan's odor-conscious consumers. (Japan Journal).(gets exclusive distribution contract from Hawaiian Organics for Japan)

TOKYO -- While working towards his MBA at Hawaii Pacific University in 2001, Ryu Murao began selling Hawaiian products to Japanese consumers over the Internet to earn some extra cash. The item people kept coming back for was Body Mint, the ingestible deodorant from Honolulu-based Hawaiian Organics.

Sniffing success, the Tokyo native did some marketing surveys and then decided to approach Hawaiian Organics about formally launching sales of the product in his home country.

"I was very confident that this would be a big hit in Japan," says Murao. His conviction stemmed from the fact that Japan has become a nation fanatic about personal hygiene and smells in recent years. ...
