Companies like Microsoft may be making millions off this whole Internet thing, but I think I know where they may have gotten the idea--from a man by the name of DeWitt Clinton
In the early 1800s, Clinton was governor of New York--twice actually. He was also the person pushing hardest for construction of the Erie Canal. A lot of non-believers pushed back.
The Erie Canal would need to cover over 360 miles, and would require eight years to build. Construction of the Erie Canal would cost in the very upscale neighborhood of $7 million.
