Japan's Taisho Pharmaceutical is outpacing competitors in the the tonic drink business with the introduction of two new products and the use of aggressive marketing, reports NI's Tokyo correspondent.

The lingering recession in Japan continues to hurt sales of tonic drinks which are drunk regularly - if not daily - by Japanese consumers looking for an energy boost. In the first half of fiscal 2002, ended September 30, overall sales were off 3% compared to the same half-year term in 2001. However, Taichi Ito, manager of Taisho's public relations section, said his firm's tonic drink sales were down by only 0.8% in the same period.
