SAN FRANCISCO -- Selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors can increase the gastric-damaging effects of aspirin, even at low doses, John L. Wallace, Ph.D., said at the annual meeting of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.
In the Celecoxib Long-Term Arthritis Safety Study (CLASS), which involved almost 8,000 people, those taking NSAIDs were almost three times as likely to have ulcer complications as were those on celecoxib. The finding confirmed the gastrointestinal advantages of the cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitor.
