Here in the heart of tobacco country, a visitor asks Thomas Payne what makes the region tick. Mr. Payne, a waiter at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar, doesn't hesitate with his response: the area's universities, technology and massive Research Triangle Park.
The answer to the question is much the same from the bartender at Woody's Tar Heel Tavern and Grill in Chapel Hill and a hostess at the Wellspring Cafe in Durham. An awareness exists among everyday people in central North Carolina that technology is woven into their lives, much like tobacco and textiles used to be.
