Eye drops that prevent the development of myopia or short-sightedness, by preventing abnormal growth of the eyeball, are being developed by Swiss pharmaceuticals company Novartis.
'These eye drops could be the difference between having to wear glasses all your life or not having to wear them at all,' said Kathrin Wyss spokesperson at Novartis.
Myopia, the ability to see objects clearly up close, but not those at a distance, is an inherited condition occurring in about 45% of the population. It is the result of elongated eyeballs.
