Virtue has never been as respectable as money, said Mark Twain. Evidently, a number of people, some of them with business interests, concur with that notion. While greed and corruption are nothing new to human behavior, its pervasiveness in international trade and commerce always surprises me, especially when it involves the United States.

For the most part, I believe that the U.S. earned and deserved the respect of the world community over the past century. As a result, we play a dominant role in such powerful organizations as the WTO, United Nations, World Bank, and the IMF, and have a tremendous ability to influence foreign opinion, policy, and even culture.
