There were days when Karen Mayo felt that life was passing her by after she retired from teaching because of health concerns.
That changed two years ago when she founded HandsOnHelp, a ministry to the Hoh American Indians of Washington state.
Mayo, 60, of Anoka, and 45 other volunteers from across the United States have sent the tribe everything from baby booties, Bibles and backpacks, to gardening tools, school supplies and shoes. In March they hope to begin building a laundry facility on the reservation.
