Feb. 23--Dr. Daniel Hamre was tending a patient at his La Grande clinic a month ago when the call came. An officer from the U.S. Army Reserve told him he had to report to his activated surgical unit within 48 hours.
The call frazzled La Grande's hospital.
Not only did Hamre have to cancel upcoming surgeries, but his departure with the 915th Forward Medical Detachment also left Grande Ronde Hospital with only one general surgeon, jeopardizing its ability to tend to emergency appendectomies or accident victims from Interstate 84.
