2003 FEB 25 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Researchers studying the bacterium Plesiomonas shigelloides have described a previously unidentified enzyme that they think is involved in the biosynthetic pathway of an unusual sugar, 2-acetamino-2-deoxy-L-altruronic acid.
Plesiomonas shigelloides is a waterborne, pathogenic bacterium that causes diarrhea and bacillary dysentery, with young children particularly susceptible.
