By identifying and measuring the different types of air pollution caused by vehicles, heating and industrial processes, European researchers hope to improve air quality and bring pollution down to acceptable levels across Europe. A number of big European cities have a problem of air pollution during the Winter caused by particulate matter (PM). According to a recent JRC study, PM pollution levels in the North of Italy are among the highest in Europe. The air quality study in Milan complements the measurements taken in the Summer of 2002 in Tenerife (Spain), where dust from the Sahara was studied.
