CHELYABINSK, Russia -- The hospital is typical of the Soviet era. The stench is sour, the concrete has been sloppily wiped but never scrubbed clean of embedded grime. The bathroom shared by dozens of patients has no toilet seat or toilet paper.
In the hallway, a shelf is stuffed with ancient gas masks. When asked why, chief Dr. Vladimir Ivanov says, ``Tradition.''
Ivanov readily offers his opinion that 70 percent of the illnesses in the world are caused by problems in the environment.
