The country occupies a large part of the region once known as Mesopotamia, which has hosted many cultures over the centuries. Since before 3000 B.C. human civilizations, including the Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian cultures, have flourished in this land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Mesopotamia often is referred to as the cradle of civilization, having given birth to both the practice of agriculture and the development of urban life.
