End of season

For some, it's an undulating flock linked
by a thread and fleeing a sudden cold snap,
or the gnarled hands of fallen leaves on the brink
of the tawny underworld, fingering a map.
For me, it's an autumn lightning bug that crawls,
dragging a belly of chilled luciferin,
no longer one of the syrupy stars, loosened
from a brilliant summer constellation. It stalls,
