On an email list recently someone commented that the proposed Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement was not really a feminist issue. I would dispute this, as international relations reflect the power relations which are an integral part of the feminist critique of patriarchal Western capitalism. Trade for profit at the expense of sustainability, war at the expense of the lives of many women and children, and appropriation of Indigenous resources for the benefit of the transnational sector are all areas of great concern to feminists who have critiqued globalisation.
