Joyce White learned about soul food long before her food-writing career began. From an early age, she helped her mother in their kitchen in rural Alabama.
Her contact with soul food's legacy stretches back even further. "My grandfather was a slave," she said in an interview. "I was able to have contacts and get stories and history that go back to the Civil War."
White is the author of the newly released "Brown Sugar: Soul Food Desserts From Family and Friends" (HarperCollins, 297 pages, $24.95) and "Soul Food: Recipes and Reflections from African American Churches."
