ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-It's clear why artist Joan Weissman chose Beyond Borders as the name of her new rug collection.
The creative process begins in Albuquerque, N.M., where the ceramic sculptor and muralist is based. The designs then travel halfway around the world and are put in the hands of Tibetan weavers in Nepal.
And the sources of inspiration for this collection include a cotton shirt from Cameroon, a fragment of Yoruba cloth, cobblestones on a Portuguese sidewalk, a cloth made with a Japanese shibori dyeing technique and a terra-cotta cup from northwest Africa.
Weissman's design philosophy goes beyond borders in a figurative sense as well. ...
