Article: Researchers test HIV/AIDS vaccine in Uganda.(Brief Article)

2003 MAR 3 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Ugandan researchers have begun testing an AIDS vaccine specifically designed for a strain of the disease common in East Africa, the lead researcher says.

Dr. Ponsiano Kaleebu said his team at the government-run Uganda Virus Research Institute gave two Ugandan volunteers the first injection February 10, 2003.

The vaccine is a two-step process that involves first delivering the genetic information on HIV, then using a weakened smallpox virus to carry the information to cells. It does not contain HIV and so cannot cause infection with the virus that causes AIDS.
