2003 MAR 4 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Although certain genes and some behaviors, like eating well-done red meat, are associated with a family history of colon cancer, that history is not a good tool for predicting whether an individual will have a colon cancer-related gene or engage in a high-risk behavior, according to new research.
"The predictive value of family history for identifying persons with at-risk genotypes or environmental risk factors is low," say Temitope O. Keku, PhD, of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and colleagues.
