A Sauk County ordinance governing permits for large gatherings was used to censor a pro-marijuana rally shut down by police in May 2000, an attorney for the event's organizer told a state appeals court Thursday.

Jeff Scott Olson, an attorney for Weedstock organizer Ben Masel, told the 4th District Court of Appeals that the county's ordinance allows officials to reject a permit application for subjective reasons.

Olson said county officials could use the ordinance to engage in "secret censorship."
