Marine scientists exploring an underwater rift valley deep in the Arctic Ocean between Greenland and Siberia have discovered the first evidence of hydrothermal activity in the region.
University of Texas marine scientist Hedy Edmonds said the expedition was amazed to find nine to 12 hydrothermal vents in the Gakkel Ridge, the slowest-spreading of the ocean ridges that separate tectonic plates in the Earth's crust.
