Natural History of Snow Geese
There are actually three species of geese that are commonly referred to as snow geese": the Ross goose, the lesser snow goose, and the greater snow goose.
The smallest of the three, the Ross goose, is white with black wing tips like the greater and lesser snow geese but has a slightly different bill, shorter neck, and normally weighs 3 1/2 pounds.
The greater snow goose is twice the size of the Ross goose and averages over 7 pounds. Other than size and a proportionally longer neck, the greater snow goose's most distinguishing mark is a prominent black band on the side of its bill called a "grinning patch."
