DESPITE PROMISING DEVELOPMENTS in both the prevention and treatment of Lyme disease, incidents of this debilitating tick-borne affliction continue to occur at record levels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16,000 cases are recorded annually, with perhaps as many as three to five times more cases unreported.
Even worse, because of increased population densities and geographic expansion of the vector tick, Lyme disease is expected to become even more prevalent in the near future, especially among outdoor recreationists, who are among the highest-risk candidates for contracting the disease.
