Mar. 6--One out of four San Joaquin County residents with jobs was driving out of the county for work in 2000, according to the latest batch of data released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

That's a sharp uptick from 1990, when one out of six working county residents crossed the county line for jobs.

That's not surprising, though, considering the flood of former Bay Area residents who kept high-paying jobs there while buying Central Valley homes at what they considered to be bargain prices, business leaders say.
