The European Union is a union of 15 independent states* founded to enhance political, economic, and social co-operation. Membership includes many of the major countries of Europe, but not Norway or Switzerland. In concept, the European Union is an institutional framework for the construction of a united Europe. It was created after World War II to unite European nations so another war among them would be unthinkable. Inclusion in the European Union is considered important for internal development of member countries.
