Q. I've heard ready-mix people talking about ternary mixtures. What's a ternary mixture, and is it something I might find in a specification?
A. You could very easily find it in a specification--in fact you've probably already used one, and you just don't know it. In a recent version of the Federal Highway Administration's HPC Bridge Views, Paul Tennis of the Portland Cement Association explained that "ternary mixtures are simply those that contain two SCMs in addition to portland cement." SCMs are supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag (called GGBFS or sometimes slag cement), silica fume, or natural pozzolans. ...
