Mar. 6--Turns out that what Nebraska Furniture Mart called a calculated risk in 2001 -- expanding into the Kansas City market -- may not have been all that risky.

About six months away from opening a new store in Kansas City, Kan., the Omaha-based company now says it will need 263 more employees than originally planned -- 738 people instead of 475.

"We're more optimistic now than we were when we announced (in February 2001)," said Bob Batt, the Mart's executive vice president.
