Andrew Hill is a gentleman through and through. But he's not too gentle to acknowledge his position in the jazz pantheon. He just waits until the time is right.
"A few years ago, I played a solo concert in Israel," the soft-spoken pianist and composer recalls by phone from his home in New Jersey. "Afterwards, the promoters came up to me and said, `The main reason we hired you was because no one else of your stature was available. But now that we've heard you, we have a question: Is there anyone else like you?'
"Of course, I had to say `no.' "
